Our Mission

Our mission is to prevent boating accidents through education, hands-on training, and safety advocacy. By equipping boaters with practical knowledge and promoting responsible decision-making, we work to reduce risk on the water and protect families from preventable loss.

What We’re Working Toward

Light the Way is actively building the next phase of our work, focused on education, preparedness, and statewide impact:

  • Boater Safety Training Programs
Developing beginner and refresher courses that combine classroom learning with real-world, on-the-water experience.

  • On-Water Training Capabilities
Working toward securing access to dedicated vessels to support hands-on safety instruction and demonstrations.

  • Experienced Instructors & Volunteers
Expanding a network of skilled boaters, safety professionals, and volunteers committed to education and outreach.

  • Ongoing Safety Advocacy
Continuing to push for improved lighting, navigational aids, and safety measures at high-risk locations across Connecticut, building on successful advocacy efforts at the Saybrook Point Breakwater.

Proven Progress

Light the Way has already helped drive meaningful change:

  • After sustained advocacy by Light the Way and the community, the U.S. Coast Guard completed the lighting of the Saybrook Point Breakwater, improving visibility and navigational safety.

  • Statewide boating safety legislation (DUI–BUI reform) has passed, strengthening accountability and public safety.

  • Community engagement and public awareness around boating safety continue to grow statewide.

This work is ongoing, and necessary.
